Under the microscope: the lived experience of neglectful families

Acting with urgency: responding to child neglect

Jan Horwath's model for work with children and families where there is neglect

Jan Horwath is an Emeritus Professor of Child Welfare in the Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield.

In this video, she discusses the importance of understanding the lived experience of neglected children and proposes a model to guide our work with children and families. Specifically, she outlines how to observe, talk with and listen closely to all members of a household.

This model aims to help practitioners gain a detailed picture of the childrens’ experiences of neglect, to talk to parents about the impact of their behaviour on their children and to guide discussions around making changes to their parenting.
